Edward Burne-Jones Biography and Artwork

Edward Burne-Jones was a renowned painter and designer who was born in Birmingham, England on August 28, 1833. He is best known for his association with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and his romantic paintings that used medieval imagery. Burne-Jones was self-taught as an artist but quickly made a name for himself within the artistic community.

The Pre-Raphaelite Movement rejected what they saw as the artificiality of academic art and looked back to medieval painting techniques. It’s no surprise then, that Burne-Jones strongly associated with this movement. He became deeply involved with Arts and Crafts and Aestheticism whilst also being part of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co.

Burne-Jones’ paintings were renowned for their attention to detail and use of vivid colors. Many consider him one of the finest British artists of the 19th century. Alongside his artistic achievements came controversy when it emerged he had extra-marital affairs with models.

Burne-Jones died June 17, 1898 in London leaving behind a lasting legacy. He left behind not only his artwork but also a son who would follow in his father’s footsteps as a portrait painter. Edward Burne-Jones will always be remembered not only as an artist but also as a leading figure within the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood movement which continues to inspire artists all around the world today.
