Gustave Caillebotte – Artwork and Bio of French painter

Gustave Caillebotte was born to a wealthy French family in Paris on 19 August 1848. His father, Martial, owned a textile manufacturing business, but Gustave was interested in other things. Gustave took to painting as early as 1860, but it remained a hobby. Caillebotte bagged a law degree in 1868 and served as an officer in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870.

Gustave finally settled with art in 1873 after earning a degree at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris. Caillebotte became friends with prominent art personalities after his war service, including Claude Monet and Pablo Picasso. Gustave became better acquainted with the nascent impressionism art movement and exhibited art for the first time in 1876.

Caillebotte had a fulfilling career and experimented with varying art forms depicting his view of Paris. Gustave, inheriting his father’s wealth at a young age, was known for donating to art and helping struggling artists. Gustave opted for a simpler life in his later years. He painted less in the 1890s and leaned toward gardening and making yachts. Gustave died on 21 February 1894 of a stroke while gardening in his home in Gennevilliers.
