About The Yerres, Rain

Gustave Caillebotte’s “The Yerres, Effect of Rain” is a stunning oil on canvas painting currently housed in the Indiana University Art Museum in Bloomington, Indiana. Although Caillebotte’s family lived by another river in northern France, this piece captures the essence of their second home at the river Yerres. This 1875 painting was submitted to the Salon jury but rejected. However, it made a remarkable impact on the art world.

The masterpiece has an interesting and unique technique where he applies thick oil paint with a palette knife in large flat strokes and employs a limited color palette – shades of grays with touches of blues and greens. An analysis of this artwork reveals its expressionistic use of light and shadow that results in an astounding landscape that evokes feelings of emotion and nostalgia.

This piece set the tone for other paintings to come such as Luncheon which was finished in 1876. Luncheon follows many of the same themes as The Yerres, Effect of Rain , displaying Caillebotte’s mastery in creating attentive landscapes that feature complex emotions through subtle gestures. Therefore, Gustave Caillebotte’s use of various techniques can be seen throughout his painting works and it comes alive definitely when admiring his famous The Yerres, Effect of Rain painting.
