About Man in a Room

Paul Cezanne was a French artist born on January 19,1839 in Aix, France. He is considered one of the most influential painters of the late 19th century and had a significant impact on artists and art movements like Cubism and Fauvism. His artwork “Man In A Room” is an exemplary piece from his later years.

Cézanne’s handling of paint became more ordered and systematic as he got older. This can be seen in “Man In A Room”, where he applied pigments to the canvas in a series of discrete, methodical brushstrokes, almost as though he was “constructing” the picture. As an artist known for his un-conventional painting technique which inspired the expressionists and cubists artists of 19th century, Cézanne’s influence can be clearly seen in this work.

The use of thick brushstrokes emphasizes the subject’s face while portraying him with somber realism. The man’s sharp features radiate from every line created by Cezanne’s brushwork; his eyes peering out at the viewer with somber intensity. It is fascinating how this seemingly simple representation captures deep emotions that are not easily visible to its viewers. The cherry on top is its rich color palette which enriches every stroke with an incredible vibrance and depth.
