About Montparnasse Station

Giorgio de Chirico’s 1914 painting, “The Melancholy of Departure,” is also known as “Gare Montparnasse.” It showcases the artist’s metaphysical style, which was heavily influenced by his introspective feelings towards travel. The multidimensional perspective in the painting features manipulated angles, lines, and shading.

De Chirico painted this masterpiece while living in Paris. It illustrates recurring themes in his works, including loneliness and detachment reflected not only by the title but also through the desolate environment depicted in rich colours of blues and yellows. “Gare Montparnasse” is a classical example of De Chirico’s early work.

This painting has been highly regarded as a masterpiece for many years. Its style still remains relevant today and continues to inspire contemporary artists to explore a similar tone of thought through their work.
