Raoul Dufy – Artwork & Bio of the French Painter

Raoul Dufy was a French painter born on 3 June 1877 in Le Havre, France. At eighteen, Dufy enrolled in evening classes at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, where he studied under Charles Lhuillier. Subsequently, he was awarded a study scholarship at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts. A year later, Dufy exhibited at the Exhibition of French Artists.

Dufy continued exhibiting and experimenting with different styles and mediums to develop a unique artistic approach. Aside from painting, he also worked on illustrations, ceramic and textile designs, and murals. He continued to paint and win acclaim locally and internationally for his expert painting techniques.

Unfortunately, by the 1950s, Dufy’s productivity was reduced due to rheumatoid arthritis.  He managed to paint during this period by fastening a brush to his hand. After a series of medical procedures and treatments, Dufy began to paint frequently again, winning the grand prize at the 1952 26th annual Venice Biennal before his death on 23 March 1953.

Raoul Dufy was influenced by prominent artists of different movements, such as Paul Cezanne,  Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, and Henri Matisse. Monet and Pissarro’s works influenced Dufy’s early Impressionist works, Matisse’s works influenced his interest in Fauvism, and Cezanne’s works influenced his adoption of Cubist methods.
