About The Annunciation

The Annunciation is one of the most painted Christian stories of all time and El Greco was no stranger to it. He created multiple versions of this Biblical event throughout his career that showcase his stylistic development. The Annunciation painting at Museo del Prado in Madrid is one of the last ones El Greco painted while in Italy and shows influence from the Venetian style. In the painting, an angel greets Mary and reveals that she will give birth to a son.

The El Greco Annunciation painting combines the fantastical use of colors and figures that was typical of the Mannerist art movement with the spiritualism that El Greco followed during his residence in Spain. The end result is a unique and captivating piece that showcases both his artistic talents and personal beliefs. Additionally, El Greco created other versions of The Annunciation for a church in Illescas, Toledo and as part of the Doña María de Aragón Altarpiece.

There is some speculation that the lower parts of the composition of The Annunciation might have been completed by El Greco’s son, Jorge. Overall, El Greco’s numerous interpretations of The Annunciation reflect his growth as an artist and communicate an important message about religious significance.
