About Large Interior W.11 (after Watteau)

Large Interior W.11 (After Watteau) is a notable artwork by the British expressionist painter Lucian Freud, created between 1981 and 1983 in oil on canvas. Measuring at 72 1/4 x 78 inches (185.4 x 198.1 cm), this painting features furniture and decor, as well as doors and windows, within a room. It is considered one of Freud’s most celebrated works and is one of three paintings announced to be displayed on the third floor near the escalator.

This painting was acquired by James Kirkman in 1983 and was later sold for a groundbreaking price at Sotheby’s in 1998. Furthermore, it was a significant piece in Freud’s posthumous exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in 2011. Prints and lithographs of the painting have been produced, and it was auctioned at Christie’s in November 2022 as part of the Paul G. Allen Collection for $86.3 million.

In general, Large Interior W.11 (After Watteau) showcases Freud’s expertise in painting and exhibits the complexity of his style. It is an example of his ability to convey the essence of a space and its occupants through subtle yet vivid strokes. This is evident in the painting’s detailed portrayal of the room’s contents and the artist’s use of shadow and light to create depth and dimension. On the whole, this painting is a profound testament to Freud’s creative genius and his contribution to the world of art.
