Theodore Gericault was a French painter born on 26 September 1791 in Rouen, France. Gericault was the only son of wealthy parents, allowing him to pursue art and study at the best schools. Before studying under Pierre-Narcisse Guérin at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Gericault trained under Carle Vernet and Pierre Bouillon.

Gericault started gaining recognition in 1812 after winning an award for his work exhibited at the Paris Salon. After losing out on the Grand Prix de Rome award, which would have enabled him to travel to Italy to study, Gericault traveled independently to study the works of the Old Masters and adopted many of their methods and techniques on his return to France.

Over the years, Gericault achieved immense success as an artist for his versatility in working with different mediums. However, the later period of his career and life was characterized by financial difficulties due to a failed investment and the artist’s depressive tendencies. On 26 January 1824, Gericault died in Paris, France, from accumulating various illnesses.
