About The Guitar

Juan Gris’ 1913 work, The Guitar, is a modern and contemporary oil painting located in the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection. This cubist painting is an example of trompe l’oeil and features a real reproductive print incorporated into the design. It features powerful colors, including black, red-brown patterned backgrounds, turquoise accents, and a blue canvas. It also includes drawings of musical notes, chords symbols, and other geometric shapes typical of Cubism. Signed “7-13”on verso with The Met’s Accession Number 1999.363.28 and belonging to the Charles H. and Mary F. S. Worcester Fund (Reference Number 1961.36).

In 1915 Juan Gris also produced another cubist still life named The Breakfast which featured predominantly yellow tones as an ode to warm tones typically associated with breakfast fare such as eggs and oranges. This piece also included details of collaged papers which suited the Cubism style perfectly; this collage contained newspaper clippings such as illustrations from advertisements or a page from a book that might be added for aesthetic flavor or to make a political statement about modern life during the early 20th century period in which he lived . With these two pieces it is clear that Juan Gris was well ahead of his time utilizing modern techniques of art to create his own visual language through Cubism which still influences artists today .
