About First Snow, North Shore of Lake Superior

Lawren Harris, a Canadian landscape painter and member of the Group of Seven, created “First Snow, North Shore of Lake Superior” in 1923. This painting depicts the ethereal landscape of the north shore of Lake Superior during winter.

Harris’s depictions of Lake Superior and the Arctic in the late 1920s were characterized by simplified forms and bold colors that evoke a sense of spirituality. It is believed that his first visit to the north shore of Lake Superior in 1921 was a revelation for him and influenced many of his subsequent paintings.

“First Snow, North Shore of Lake Superior” is an excellent example of this simplified style. The painting features minimalistic shapes and lines that convey a sense of harmony with nature. The white snow covers most part of the canvas while dark lines outline subtle nuances in its texture.

Harris’s artistic genius is evident in his exceptional ability to capture nature’s essence through such uncomplicated forms. His best-known paintings also include “Above Lake Superior” and “The Ice House, Coldwell, Lake Superior.” These paintings collectively contribute to an engaging series showcasing Harris’s love for landscapes as well as evoking feelings inspired by natural beauty through unique interpretations on canvas.
