About The Jack Pine

The Jack Pine is an iconic oil painting created by the Canadian artist, Tom Thomson, in 1916-17. It has become one of Canada’s most recognizable artworks and is renowned for its stunning depiction of the country’s landscape. The painting showcases Thomson’s skillful transition from a small sketch to a large canvas with great precision and accuracy.

With influences ranging from Impressionism to Art Nouveau, as well as the achievements of the Group of Seven, Thomson produced a work that was radically different from his original oil sketch. Many consider it to be his greatest masterpiece. The Jack Pine is currently displayed in the National Gallery of Canada located in Ottawa.

Thomson, known for his depictions of northern Ontario landscapes, left behind an incredible legacy before his untimely death due to drowning in Canoe Lake between July 8th and July 16th in 1917. His body was discovered eight days after he went missing while on a canoe trip with fellow artist Shannon Fraser. His paintings have since become iconic symbols of Canadian artistry and culture.
