About The Artist and his Wife

The artist Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres is considered one of the most accomplished neoclassical painters of his time. Though a young man, he moved away from his family in Montauban to study at Toulouse’s Academy under Joseph Roques. He later moved to Paris where he studied under Jacques Louis David and perfected his skills as an artist. Today, his paintings still remain popular among art lovers and are exhibited in various art galleries around the world.

Ingres was a master at creating portraits and history paintings; his best known works include ‘The Turkish Bath’ which is hung in the Louvre. Other notable works include ‘Oath of Horatii’, ‘Jupiter and Thetis’ and ‘Antiochus and Stratonice.’ One of his most famous paintings is ‘Odalisque And Slave’ which was completed in 1839 and features two women surrounded by lions.
