About Le Bain Turc

Le Bain Turc is an artwork painted by the French neoclassical painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and dated 1862. The painting is supposedly the last work of Ingres, who was 82 years old at the time. In a new form, he altered its original rectangular format to a tondo composition. The painting depicts a group of women bathing in a harem – with luxurious elements such as cloth cover, cushions and mirrors. As an acknowledgement of the impact that this artwork had on the world, exhibitions have been held all around regarding his work in The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Museum of Modern Art.

Ingres is considered one of the most influential painters in history and his legacy is still celebrated all over the world today. His other famous work titled ‘La Grand Odalisque’ (1814) immediately stands out for its delicate show of femininity and mastery from his own hand. Displaying his signature smooth brushwork, this artwork can also be seen amongst other permanent collections in several art galleries around the world.

Le Bain Turc and La Grand Odalisque are significant masterpieces in the art realm that have been praised for many generations due to their timeless beauty and iconic nature. As both artworks demonstrate Ingres’ genius, it is understandable why they are still recognized by so many art enthusiasts today, despite having been created over 150 years ago.
