About Highway and Byways

Paul Klee, born in Switzerland in 1879, was a Swiss-German artist who developed a sophisticated visual vocabulary of shapes, line and color during the course of his career. He was renowned for his paintings, drawings and prints which combined disparate elements with surrealistic overtones to achieve a unique range of effects. In 1929, Paul Klee visited Egypt where he created a painting titled ‘Highway and Byways’. The painting is an aerial view of grain fields on either side of the River Nile, and the top blue strip represents the river. This painting was reflective of Paul Klee’s appreciation for nature and his eye for colors and shapes at work.

Paul Klee had another masterpiece in 1939, named ‘Embrace’, which portrayed two lovers embracing each other with abstract figures that form a heart shape in the center – thus providing an interesting representation of emotion. This work explored the complexities of relationships through abstract forms. These were two brilliant pieces from Paul Klee that showcased how he was able to go outside society’s standards by exploring unknownaesthetic possibilities through art.
