About The Annunciation

Leonardo da Vinci’s painting, The Annunciation, is one of his earliest major works completed during his time as an apprentice in the studio of Andrea del Verrocchio. This masterpiece depicts the biblical scene where the Archangel Gabriel announces to the Virgin Mary about her upcoming birth to a child named Jesus Christ.

Executed using oil and tempera on poplar wood panel, this painting showcases Leonardo’s artistic skills and technique. For instance, he uses sfumato – a technique involving delicate blending between colors – for its landscape background. Besides that, it focuses on the elevated spiritual aspects of Jesus’ existence with Angel Gabriel holding a Madonna lily in his left hand.

Initially presented anonymously in 1867 with Leonardo being attributed later on alongside consideration as one of his first major artworks. It measures 217 cm wide and 98 cm long in overall size.

The scene’s composition is symbolic and harmonious: Mary’s fingers are positioned gracefully while reading her book; Gabriel appears weightless as he lands from heaven, blessing her womb – this represents transcendence over earthly problems. The depiction also makes use of perspective rendering techniques to create depth accuracy across objects present within the picture plane making even more captivating for viewers today through its well-detailed excellence.
