About John the Baptist

Leonardo da Vinci’s painting, Saint John the Baptist, is considered to be his last masterpiece. Completed between 1513-1516 with oil on walnut wood measuring 69x57cm the painting showcases da Vinci’s prowess in using chiaroscuro to isolate the figure of John the Baptist from a murky background. In this way, he draws attention to John’s piercing gaze and commanding presence as he points upward with his finger.

The painting is currently exhibited at one of the world’s most famous art museums, The Musée du Louvre in Paris, France. It is recognized worldwide as one of da Vinci’s finest works of art and displays his extraordinary play with light and shadow. Additionally, it is believed that this painting represents a culmination of all qualities developed by da Vinci throughout his career as an artist.

Overall, Saint John the Baptist remains a marvel among lovers of Renaissance art and Leonardo specifically. Its impressive use of chiaroscuro along with its captivating portrayal of one figure has been praised for centuries for its unique pieces and technical skill.
