About Calvary

Calvary, painted by Andrea Mantegna, is located in the Basilica di San Zeno in Verona. It is one of three panels making up the predella for the San Zeno altarpiece. Mantegna had a very high level of technical ability, which he demonstrated both in the design and execution of this painting. This is seen in his careful attention to perspective, depicting figures correctly from different directions and at varying distances from each other. The emotion expressed in this painting is powerful; even though those crucified are dying, their stoicism signifies their faithfulness to God.

The St. Luke Polyptych by Andrea Mantegna offers another example of his remarkable skill as an artist. Completed between 1453 and 1454, it displays religious subjects with three-dimensional illusions built up with layers of perspective against flat backgrounds. It also boasts a widely celebrated integration of architecture around its figures that adds further insight into Mantegna’s skill with perspective and illusionism. Both Calvary and the St. Luke Polyptych are perfect examples demonstrating Mantgna’s technical skills as well as his envisioning imagination that allow us viewers to appreciate the ethereal beauty of his paintings.
