About Fox Trot; Lozenge Composition with Three Black Lines

One of Piet Mondrian’s most famous pieces, Fox Trot; Lozenge Composition With Three Black Lines was painted by the Dutch-born artist in 1929. It is an instance of Mondrian’s lozenge paintings – where he experimented with the diamond-shaped format starting in 1918. In this painting, the three primary colors – red, yellow and blue are seen. By 1921 Mondrian had taken his compositions even further and distilled them into black lines that intersect at right angles to define rectangles painted only in white or gray.

The composition of Fox Trot; Lozenge Composition With Three Black Lines in its simplicity has inspired many future artists and defined what we now know as abstract art. Mondrian’s fascination with geometric shapes and color combinations can also be found on his later works, such as Composition with Yellow, Blue And Red (1937-42). Together, these paintings make up a brilliant window into the eyes and mind of one of the most influential modern painters of all time.
