About Composition with Yellow

Composition with Red, Blue, and Yellow is a painting created in 1930 by the Dutch artist Piet Mondrian. As a co-founder of the De Stijl art movement and Neo-Plasticism, Mondrian aimed to create abstract images without fixed symbols or associations. In this painting, he focuses on relational opposites, asymmetry, and pure planes of color.

Composed in a rectangular shape with dominant geometric shapes like squares and rectangles, the composition is asymmetrical with one block of yellow occupying its center. The distribution of smaller blocks of blue and red around the central block ensures balance while maintaining aesthetic harmony.

Mondrian limited his palette to only primary hues-reds, blues, and yellows-during the use for this masterpiece. Despite its small size compared to his other works, Composition With Red Blue And Yellow is perhaps the most well-known painting from his oeuvre.

The yellow paint used in Composition With Red Blue And Yellow contained beeswax and carnauba wax as paint additives. The artwork portrays an uncompromising simplicity that embodies these waxes’ natural quality alongside geometrical shapes’ modernist style – highly valued features of neo-plastic art movement that Mondrian led.
