Anne In Doorway is a painting created by the American painter and art critic, Fairfield Porter, in 1974. The work depicts a woman standing in an open doorway, with sunlight streaming through the frame. This painting is one of many examples of Porter’s representational style during the heyday of Abstract Expressionism.
Porter’s practice was influenced by several artists, including Pierre Bonnard and Édouard Vuillard, which can be seen in his use of light and color. However, he also employed lush paint handling techniques similar to Willem de Kooning. Anne In Doorway is an excellent example of how Porter combined these elements to create a rich and complex image.
The Parrish Art Museum houses the largest collection of Porter’s works and papers. Additionally, the Boston Museum of Fine Art organized a retrospective exhibition of Porter’s art in 1983 – which remains his largest to date. Although Porter died at age 68 in 1975, his paintings remain popular for their unique blend of abstraction and representation.
