Frederic Remington Biography and Artwork

Frederic Sackrider Remington was an American artist famous for his depiction of the Old West through paintings, illustrations, sculptures, and writings. Born in Canton, NY in 1861 to a distinguished family, Remington studied art at Yale University and the Art Students League of New York. He went on to become the most successful and famous Western American artist in his lifetime.

Remington’s subjects focused on cowboys, American Indians, horses, military events, and western frontier landscapes. He was well-known for being a chronicler par excellence of the Old West during its closing decades. The Bronco Buster bronze sculpture is one of his best works and has been used in more than 300 casts.

In addition to painting and illustrating scenes from the Old West with meticulous detail that captured its ruggedness and vitality accurately, Remington also experimented with sculpture work. His expertise earned him numerous accolades as an artist during his lifetime while cementing his place as one of America’s national treasures.
