Georges Rouault is most recognized for his work in painting, and he once said that it was a way to forget life. Sadly, he passed away in 1958 surrounded by his crucifix – intoning his belief in God. Prior to his passing, Rouault had exhibited with the Fauves and is often credited with pioneering an abstract art movement dubbed ‘Fauvism’. He went on to produce works of art spanning between 1905 and 1938, with pieces such as ‘Slaughter’ (1905) and ‘Three Judges’ (1938).
One of Roualt’s most iconic works is ‘The Old King’ painted in 1936. At its core, the painting reflects Roualt’s commitment to symbolism, which was heavily influenced by the Georgist Movement. By utilizing bold colors and powerful symbolism, this painting has been both celebrated and controversial throughout history and even today – it remains widely recognized as an example of success within art history.
