About The Dream

Henri Rousseau’s painting, ‘The Dream’ was created in 1910 when he was 49 years old. It is one of over 25 of his paintings with a jungle theme, and still manages to capture the imagination of art lovers today. Completed in soft hues, this painting employs intriguing imagery with its densely occupied jungle. The focal point is an alluring woman who is fast asleep on a divan – representing a pure state of sensation. Art dealer Ambroise Vollard purchased the painting from the artist himself in 1910, assuring its place among the art world’s immortal masterpieces.

Another noteworthy work by Rousseau is his painting ‘Surprise’, painted in 1891 when he was 39 years old. It features two young women that are startled by an animal rustling in the nearby foliage as they take a casual stroll through the meadows on a beautiful day. This lovely piece emphasizes Rousseau’s mastery of detail and his extraordinary use of color and light. His work continues to entertain and surprise us even today.
