John Singer Sargent, born in Florence to American parents in 1856, was a leading portrait painter of his generation known for his evocations of Edwardian-era luxury. He received his first formal art instruction in Rome in 1868 and went on to create roughly 900 oil paintings and more than 2,000 watercolors, as well as countless sketches and charcoal drawings.
Sargent was known for his loosely painted portraits done in a style reminiscent of Edgar Degas and James Abbott McNeill Whistler. He left behind a towering body of work that includes many legendary portraits depicting the aristocracy and beautiful watercolors depicting scenes from his travels. His most famous works include “Madame X,” “Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose,” and “The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit.”
Sargent’s versatility as an artist extended beyond portraiture; he also produced murals such as those at the Boston Public Library and murals for the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. He died on April 14, 1925. Sargent’s legacy endures today as one of America’s greatest expatriate artists with an impressive body of work that spans multiple mediums throughout his prolific career.
