About El Jaleo

John Singer Sargent’s painting El Jaleo captures the essence of the traditional flamenco dance. This legendary painting was exibited at the Paris Salon in 1882, and it’s true beauty resonated with viewers around the world. Prior to exhibiting this work, Sargent had spent some time in Spain where he gained first hand knowledge of rural life, culture and class segregation. His representation of an Andalusian dance called jaleo drew inspiration from his cultural understanding and appreciation of Spanish heritage. This painting is housed at the Isabela Stewart Gardner Museum, and continues to inspire viewers today.

In addition to El Jaleo, Sargent also produced nature-themed paintings such as Claude Monet Painting In A Garden, which was painted in 1885. This painting is considered a tribute to Sargent’s close friend Claude Monet and has become another iconic artwork by John Singer Sargent that has withstood the test of time. Through this work he captured outdoor scenes with colors that mimic those that can be found in nature. Through these paintings we learn more about the artist himself and gain an understanding of what inspired him during his travels across Europe.
