Jesse Treviņo is the informal artist laureate of my hometown, San Antonio. A promising artist before he lost his painting hand in Vietnam, Treviņo's victorious struggle to adapt to that loss has been an inspiration. Painting from photographs in the photorealistic tradition, two of Treviņo's paintings are in the collection of the Smithsonian's American Art Museum. In recent years Treviņo has become known for his building-size murals and mosaics. His "Spirit of Healing", on Santa Rosa Children's Hospital has become a San Antonio landmark. This mural consists of over 150,000 pieces of hand-cut ceramic tile and stands more than 90 feet tall, making it one of the largest murals in North America. Trevino's current project is a 40-foot, three-dimensional veladora, or candleholder, that will be dedicated to the victims of the September 11 terrorist attack.
