About Landscape with a River and a Bay in the Distance

Joseph Mallord William Turner’s painting, Landscape with a River and a Bay in the distance, was completed in 1834 and hung in the Louvre. This painting marked an important milestone in the ongoing investigations of light and atmosphere that Turner conducted throughout his career and would eventually influence Impressionists and Post-Impressionists. The painting showcases his trademark swirling vortex of wind, rain, snow and clouds that he returned to often.

Turner was also known for his landscape-portraits artworks; Apre is one example, created circa 1799. His works focused on capturing light’s nuances through composition to create beautiful atmosphere scenes.

Moving on to other important works by Turner, Interior At Petworth was completed in c. 1837. This work remains one of Turner’s most impressive pieces of art with its mastery of atmospheric intensity and feeling of drama as he featured himself painting within the composition itself – a daring move at the time. In this piece he highlights an usage of dynamic brushstrokes, vibrant colors and immense play with lighting effects to create a stunningly realistic view inside a gothic castle.
