About Portrait of Cardinal Nicolas Albergati

The Portrait Of Cardinal Nic Albergati is a painting by early Netherlandish painter Jan van Eyck. Created in about 1431, this oil painting on wood captures the dignified profile of Niccolò Albergati, a powerful cardinal in Pope Martin V’s court. Unfortunately, there are no drawings known to have been created for this particular piece. Despite this, other paintings from within the same period help inform our look into this masterpiece. With dimensions measuring 34 1/2 X 27 3/8 in., one can appreciate how much detail is present in each brush stroke and how it captures the poise of Niccolò Albergati himself.

As with all artworks from Jan Van Eyck, he was able to create something accurate that stands the test of time – especially when considering works from over 600 years ago! Hence, it is easy to understand why he is referred to as one of the world’s most accomplished Early Netherlandish painters and even still revered by artists and art historians today. In the same vein, his painting A Man In A Turban from 1433 exemplifies his genius with remarkable accuracy following similar techniques and displaying another impactful portrait from his repertoire.
