About Olive Trees with the Alpilles in the Background

Vincent Van Gogh painted numerous olive tree artworks during his stay at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in 1889. “Olive Trees with the Alpilles in the Background” is one such painting that he created. It features an olive grove in the foreground, with mountains in the background and a sky painted with swirling strokes. The painting displays Van Gogh’s increasing use of rhythmic brushstrokes and tumultuous forms. It is a clear tribute to Jean-Francoise Millet, the artist who inspired Van Gogh.

Van Gogh spent one year at the asylum of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, where he painted the surrounding olive trees, wheat fields and cypresses. “Olive Trees with the Alpilles in the Background” features bright green olive trees that twist and crimp. The sky, painted with a light-washed effect, displays bundled, ectoplasmic clouds.

The painting is housed in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. It is a visual testament to Van Gogh’s dedication to the beauty of nature and his passion for painting. “Olive Trees with the Alpilles in the Background” is an excellent example of Van Gogh’s signature style of bold, expressive painting that has made him one of the most celebrated artists of all time.
