About Christina's World

Christina’s World, a painting by Andrew Wyeth, was created in 1948 and has since become one of his most recognized works. It depicts a young woman lying on a grassy field looking towards her house, her body immediately suggesting that she is unable to walk properly due to being afflicted with Polio as a child. Through this symbolism and imagery, Wyeth conveys her struggle to make the journey back home despite her disability. This could represent how society treated those who are different – despite her struggles she would forever remain an outcast.

The original painting resides at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and it has grown in popularity since its conception. Although it did not receive critical acclaim initially, over time its powerful message resonated with people from all walks and ages of life, enabling them to understand the challenges of life for those who are different. Lastly, Christina’s World is an extraordinary artwork that speaks loudly about Wyeth’s talent for emotion and his ability to convey stories of tragedy through visuals.
