Max Ernst – Artwork & Bio of the German Painter

Max Ernst was a German painter born on 2 April 1891 in Bruhl, Germany. Ernst, being a rebellious young man, abandoned his study of philosophy and picked up painting. He developed his ability by studying and copying the works of famous painters. In 1919, Ernst created collages and recreated manuals and catalogs fantastically. He also experimented with sculpting while in Cologne.

Ernst left Cologne for Paris in 1922 and became one of the pioneers of the Surrealism movement. During this period, he experimented with various methods, such as decalcomania and frottage. Ernst escaped from France in 1941 and moved to New York, where Peggy Guggenheim helped him settle into the American art world. After twelve years, Ernst moved back to France and won more acclaim before his death on 1 April 1976.

Previously associated with and cofounding the Dadaist group, Ernst focused primarily on Surrealism methods following his move to Paris in 1922.
