About Selbstbildnis als Soldat

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner created the expressionist oil painting “Selbstbildnis Als Soldat” in 1915. Standing at 69cm in height and 61cm in width, this piece features a wounded soldier with a bloody amputated arm, his right hand missing.

The physical trauma that the soldier faces suggests the psychological distress of war, reflected both through the subject’s vacant gaze and defined facial features. It is an impressive painting that highlights the force of modern strife and also makes reference to a self-portrait Kirchner had done earlier which represented him as a strong soldier.

This powerful piece of artwork represents another artist’s output from Ernst Ludwig Kirchner during this era, such as “Girl Under A Japanese Parasol” (c. 1909). Here, he depicted an urban scene with two tenderly drawn figures of two women dressed in vibrant colors. The detailed backdrops create a nostalgic sepia tone to offset their vibrant figures, alluding to traditional Japanese art styles. This work is further proof that Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was a master of spectacle and precision.
