Michelangelo was commissioned by Pope Julius II as the third artist to complete the project for the Sistine Chapel. One of Michelangelo’s works, The Flood, painted between 1508-1512 is an allegory showcasing four different dramas. The Ark in which the righteous will be saved depicts an allegory of the Church.
The Flood measured at 280 x 560 cm and shows desperation and panic settling in among survivors. As sinners were cleansed during The Flood, so does the wood of the Cross offer salvation to those who are in the Church.
