About Pies, Pies, Pies

Wayne Thiebaud is a renowned American painter and printmaker known for his Pop Art depictions of everyday objects. His work ‘Pies, Pies, Pies’ from 1961 mirrors this theme, featured rows of tantalisingly sweet treats stacked atop each other. Although his subjects are seemingly mundane, Thiebaud presents an unrealistic composition where he exaggerates size and form – making the familiar extraordinary.

Not just limited to food items, Thiebaud has also been known to depict other subject matters such as people. In particular, works such as ‘Man Sitting – Back View’ from 1964 feature in the same style – vibrant use of colours and exaggerated size, while keeping to the theme of realism – working together to add depth to his pieces. Capturing human emotions and reactions set against everyday objects like pies gives rise to Thiebaud’s iconic Pop Art movement.
