Tips for Viewing the Images
I've gotten a lot of feedback regarding the inability to see all of the images at once in the limited screen area. Much of the remarks place blame on the frames. Unfortunately, I consider the frames as essential to the interface. I want the entire listing of artists available at all times to encourage random browsing...one of the joys of art is being amazed by an artist you've never even heard of before.
Nevertheless, there are many ways to maximize your screen real estate:
- Yes, I know JavaScript can solve a lot of these issues. UPDATE: Thanks to Daniel Marx, who has allowed me to use his excellent Image Viewer Javascript to fix this problem once and for all. Unfortunately, I will have to recode each image by hand to incorporate this feature, so it will be some time before every image is accessible through the Image Viewer. In the meantime...
- Click on the frame border (the thin line to the right of the artist list scrollbar...you'll know you're there when your cursor changes to show two thin black vertical lines with horizontal black arrows pointing left and right on the outside of the lines) and drag it to the left to make more room in the image frame. You can drag it back later to view the artist listing again when you want to look in another section.
- Right-click on an image displaying in the image frame. From the pop-up menu, select "Open Frame in New Window". This will open another copy of Netscape, displaying only the image (and text), without the frames. Close this second browser to return to the other sections of the Artchive.
- Right-click on an image displaying in the image frame. From the pop-up menu, select "View Image (filename.jpg)". This will show the image only (no text) without frames.
- Even in these modes, many images (especially on 640 x 480 resolution screens) will still require scrolling to fully view. The following method, although the most complicated, is the most rewarding way to view the images (my friend Forrest Fowler swears by it): On the Netscape menu bar, click on "Edit", then "Preferences". In the "Category" window, double-click on "Navigator", then click on "Applications". In the "Description" window, select the application that is associated with the "JPG" filename extension (this is different for different computers). Click on "Edit...". The "Handled By" box will have "Navigator" checked. Check the "Application" button, then "Browse" to the executable file for a graphics program capable of displaying JPG files. There are plenty of shareware programs available at download.com (be sure to register if you use them). Once you have established your graphics program as the "Helper" for JPG files, then follow the previous tip...instead of the JPG displaying in your browser, it will now call up your graphics client. You can then use the graphics software to resize the image to fit your screen, etc.
- A couple of Internet Explorer tips from Jeff Baker:
- "Pressing F11 changes view to full screen. . . literally."
- "Click on 'view' on the menu bar. Click on 'internet options'. Click on the 'advanced' tab. There is a list of options. scroll down until you see 'Toolbar'. Check the 'Small Icons' box."
