Wayne Thiebaud (1920 – 2021) was an American painter and printmaker best known for his thickly painted still lifes of ordinary objects like food and cosmetics. Born in Mesa, Arizona, Thiebaud began his artistic career as a freelance cartoonist before working various jobs to develop his skills. He became one of the most well-known Pop artists in America, known for his colorful depictions of everyday items such as pies, hotdogs and ice cream cones.
Thiebaud’s work combined gestural brushwork with commercial imagery and everyday subject matter. His representations of light and shadow gave them a distinctly American feel, evoking a sense of nostalgia that is still appreciated today. In addition to his still lifes, Thiebaud also explored landscapes and figure paintings in his art.
Throughout his illustrious career, Thiebaud received many awards including the National Medal of Arts in 1994. He was survived by his wife and family at the time of passing.
