Edouard Manet was a French painter born on 23 January 1832 in Paris, France. He took drawing classes as a teenager and later took lessons in Thomas Couture’s studio. Despite his immense talent, Manet’s revolting traits saw his works constantly refused by the Salon. He responded by holding regular meetings with like-minded, talented painters and holding personal exhibitions.
Manet and The Salon frequently disagreed on the theme and subject of his paintings, leading to him holding personal exhibitions and receiving constant criticisms. At his eventual showing at the Salon in 1880, he won a second-place medal and the Legion of Honor the following year. Manet suffered a terrible illness that took his life on 30 April 1883 in Paris.
