El Lissitzky was a Russian artist, born in 1890, who was a key figure in the vanguard of Bolshevik artists that shaped the aesthetic program of Soviet Russia. He was involved in various avant-garde art movements such as Suprematism and Constructivism and became a pioneer of nonrepresentational art.
Lissitzky began his career illustrating Yiddish children’s books to promote Jewish culture in Russia before moving into teaching as a significant aspect of his life. He taught in various artistic media, spreading and exchanging ideas with those around him. One of his most famous works is the Russian Pavilion for the 1925 International Exposition of Modern which he worked on for the Russian avant-garde art movement.
As well as his work on painting, Lissitzky was also a pioneer of design, architecture, typography, and installation art.
