Fabritius came from an artistic family; both his father and brother were painters. He studied under Rembrandt van Rijn before becoming an independent artist himself.

One of Fabritius’ most famous works is “The Goldfinch,” a painting that depicts a chained pet goldfinch perched on top of its feeder.

Unfortunately, Fabritius’s promising career was cut short when he died in a tragic event. In 1654, a gunpowder magazine exploded in Delft, where Fabritius lived and worked. The explosion destroyed much of the city, including Fabritius’s studio and many of his paintings. He was killed in the blast at the age of 32, leaving behind only a relatively small body of work.
