Paolo Uccello was a prominent Florentine painter and mathematician who lived during the late Gothic and early Renaissance period. Despite being trained in a Gothic style of painting, Uccello attempted to reconcile this style with the emerging Renaissance art styles of his time.
The artist was especially known for his obsession with perspective, which he spent many long hours studying and experimenting with. This preoccupation can be seen in his paintings, most notably in his famous depictions of the Battle of San Romano.
Uccello’s nickname came from his love of painting birds, but it is his contributions to art through mathematics that have made him truly renowned. He died at the age of 78 in Florence in 1475.
Overall, Paolo Uccello’s life and work serve as an example of how artists during this period wrestled with conflicting artistic styles while striving to innovate new techniques that would improve their craft.
