Rembrandt van Rijn was a Dutch painter and printmaker, widely considered one of the greatest artists of all time. Rembrandt was born on 15 July 1607 in Leiden, the Dutch Republic. After withdrawing from the university, Rembrandt apprenticed under Jacob Swanenburgh and Pieter Lastman.

On his return to Leiden, Rembrandt established his studio and started painting commissioned works that brought him immense acclaim. In 1632, he became a member of the guild of painter and a burgess of Amsterdam.

Despite Rembrandt’s lofty reputation, he struggled with financial problems throughout the later part of his career due to his frivolous nature. Rembrandt’s style became obsolete at the turn of the 17th century. Though he initially refused to switch, Rembrandt’s later works featured landscape paintings that were instantly accepted by the public and critics. Rembrandt died a poor man on 4 October 1669 in Amsterdam.
