“Above Horizon” is an installation artwork created by James Turrell in 2004. It is part of the “Skyspaces” series and is recognized within the Light and Space, and Environmental (Land) Art movements.
The artwork features a minimalistic room with intense, warm orange lighting that emanates from the ceiling and floor, bathing the space in a vibrant glow. Two rectangular cutouts, one on the ceiling and the other on the wall, allow the viewer to gaze at the sky. These openings frame portions of the sky, which stand in stark contrast to the orange-lit environment, creating a harmonious balance of natural and artificial light. This interplay offers a contemplative space that encourages immersive experiences and reflections on light, space, and perception.
