About Athena

Greek mythology includes various gods and goddesses, and Athena is one of the most prominent figures. As the daughter of Zeus, Athena was identified as the city protectress and goddess of war, wisdom, handicraft, practical reason, and law. She is also the guardian of Athens and has become a significant symbol of victory, justice, and strategic warfare.

In Greek art, Athena is often depicted wearing a long robe or draped in a cloak. There are several sculptures that represent the goddess, including “Athena Lemnia,” which is a classic depiction created by Phidias. The Venus de Milo, another famous sculpture, is believed to be from the Hellenistic period and is recognized as an iconic representation of beauty and art. Additionally, the Parthenon, the architectural masterpiece of Perikles’ building program, features the Greek goddess as a central figure. Her statue, which was made of ivory and gold, was decorated with precious stones and became a notable feature of the Parthenon.

One of the most celebrated works of the Renaissance era is Raphael Sanzio’s fresco painting, “The School of Athens.” The painting features Athena as one of the central figures, standing alongside Plato and Aristotle, and symbolizing wisdom and knowledge. Overall, Athena is a significant figure in Greek mythology and art, representing several attributes that are held in high regard even today.
