“Chance Meeting” is a sculpture created in 1989 by the artist George Segal. The artwork is part of the Environmental (Land) Art and Pop Art movements.
The artwork portrays a seemingly spontaneous encounter among three individuals. These life-sized figures, cast in bronze with a patina finish, stand under a pole bearing two “ONE WAY” signs, which point in opposite directions. The individuals are positioned close enough to suggest a conversation or interaction is taking place. The sculpture’s placement on a base that mirrors the gallery floor material enhances the scene’s lifelike quality, blending art with environmental and pop art contexts. The individuals’ attire and expressions further contribute to the narrative of a coincidental street-side meeting, evoking themes of urban life and human connections.
