“Composition” is an abstract artwork created by Al Held in 1961. It is a notable example of the Hard Edge Painting movement.
The artwork is characterized by its use of bold, geometric shapes and vivid colors. A dominant red circle bordered by a yellow band occupies the left portion of the artwork against a blue background. Adjacent to this, a vertically oriented red rectangle is encased by several layers of contrasting colors, including orange, green, and pink, creating a layered, almost three-dimensional effect. The composition is striking in its simplicity and precision, with clean lines and flat planes of color that exemplify the Hard Edge Painting style.
