About Deesis from the Church of Nikola of Kozhe

The artwork titled “Deesis from the Church of Nikola of Kozhe” is an exceptional example of the Pskov school of icon painting, crafted by “Orthodox Icons” circa 1200 – 1300. This religious icon is composed of tempera on wood, measuring 140 by 110 centimeters. It is a part of the “Christ the Savior” series and currently resides in the Russian Museum, Saint Petersburg, Russia.

The artwork features a classical Byzantine Deesis scene, with Christ the Savior at the center, enthroned and holding a book. His hand is raised in blessing, emblematic of his role as the divine judge. Flanking Christ are the Virgin Mary to the left and John the Baptist to the right, both depicted with hands raised in intercession. Set against a richly detailed background with celestial elements, the icon is resplendent with vibrant reds, golds, and dark hues, characteristic of the tempera medium. The intricate detailing of the saints’ garments and halos reflect the meticulous craftsmanship and pious devotion of the Pskov school. The presence of angels further enriches the sacred narrative depicted in this venerable piece.
