The artwork titled “DISCUS THROWER (AFTER MYRON)” is a contemporary sculpture created by Yinka Shonibare in 2016. As part of the contemporary and postcolonial art movements, this piece is a reimagining of the classical Greek sculpture, encapsulating themes and visual elements distinctive of Shonibare’s artistry.
The sculpture depicts a dynamic figure caught in the motion of a discus throw. Clad in an elaborate, brightly-colored patterned attire that contrasts with its traditional form, the figure’s body is adorned with vivid designs that are characteristic of African textiles. Notably, the head of the figure is represented by a globe, which adds a significant layer of symbolism related to global identity and cultural exchanges. The artwork holds a striking balance between classical aesthetics and postcolonial commentary, posed prominently on a grey pedestal that accentuates its vibrant composition against the minimalist background.
