“Dividing The Light,” created by James Turrell in 2007, belongs to the Light and Space as well as Environmental (Land) Art movements. This installation is part of Turrell’s “Skyspaces” series. The artwork features an open ceiling, which frames the sky and manipulates the light in the surrounding environment, creating an immersive visual experience.
The artwork comprises a rectangular aperture that reveals the sky above, framed by a concrete structure. As the day progresses, the natural light changes, causing the colors and perception of the space to shift dramatically. The interplay of light and shadow, along with the reflected images in the water feature below, serves to enhance the atmospheric and contemplative nature of the installation. The simple yet profound design engages viewers, inviting them to experience the celestial phenomena in a new and intimate way.
