About Knight portrait

“Knight Portrait” (“Portrait of a Man”) is a Oil on Canvas painting by Adele Romany created in the late 18th century.  The painting depicts a well dressed man sitting on a log, against the backdrop of the ocean and cliffs.  The painting measures 61 x 49.5 cm, and is painted in the Neoclassicism style.

Adele Romany, born Marie Jeanne Romanee on December 7, 1769, was a distinguished French painter renowned for her portrait work and miniatures, particularly those depicting individuals from the performing arts. Her artistic journey began under the tutelage of Jean-Baptiste Regnault, and she was part of the affluent family of the Marquis de Romance, despite being his illegitimate daughter.

Romany’s career was marked by her participation in the Paris Salon, where she exhibited her works from 1793 to 1808 under the name Romany and from 1808 to 1833 as Romanee. Her talent was recognized with a gold medal from the jury in 1808. She was once married to Francois Antoine Romany, a fellow miniature painter, though they later divorced.

Adele Romany passed away on June 6, 1846, in Paris, leaving behind a legacy as one of the 19th century’s prominent French women painters. Her works continue to be celebrated and studied for their contribution to the art world, and her portraits remain a window into the styles and sensibilities of her era.
